Bible Study

An integral part of the psfc ministry is studying the Bible with students.

The study follows the following template:

Picture
The PSFC Bible Study method is based upon methods used by the Swedish & Indian Student movements. The methods were redesigned by former staff worker Pastor Tony Wright to suit our local context. The first three steps are taken from the Swedish method whilst the fourth step comes from the Indian method. Please see below for a simple explanation of the PSFC Bible Study Template.

Study Number
Study Number is the number of studies done in a book according to the chapter or passage. For example, you can break a chapter into two bible studies and then number it accordingly.

Passage Text
This is the selected book and passage for the weekly bible study. The passage text and the passage study are attached.

Steps & Reflection

I was struck by....?

Lightning!

This should be something that ‘shines’ from the passage – whatever draws the reader's attention or impacts them the most. On the box provided underneath the question, the student is required to write down the verse or verses, words, actions etc. that stood out for him/her while reading the passage. E.g. “I was struck by verse 21 & 22 of the passage that explains how the writer was 'alienated from God but was then reconciled by Christ's physical body through his death on the cross”. The student is then asked to share why he/she was struck by a particular verse/verses during the small group discussion.

I wonder what/why....?

A question mark!
Anything that is too difficult to understand in the text or a question he or she would have, the reader would like to ask the writer of the passage or the Lord. In this step the student is required to write down anything that they question or wonder while going through the passage. E.g. “I wonder what or why Paul mentioned it in verse 24 that he rejoices while he is suffering for the church. How can you rejoice in time of suffering?” They are allowed to share their question during small group time but it should not be answered during the discussion. This is to encourage the individual to go and research the question themselves and then later share to the fellowship if he/she found the answer. This is bible engagement.

I will apply (i.e. what will I change/do?)...

The play button!
A personal application for the reader’s life. Whatever verse or verses from the passage that God is using and is speaking into the readers life that need action or to be obedient to. To repent of a certain behaviour or lifestyle, to do something that the passage is implying. E.g. in verse 25 “as servant by the commission God gave, like Paul I need to present the Gospel in its fullness”.

I can speak to....?

To speak to who?
Who will I share this lesson to? The reader is encouraged to name at least one person that they will commit  to share what they has learnt from the passage with. Naming people can enable other members in the group to pray for them during the meeting and also in the week.
E.g. “I can speak about what I have learnt to Ray”.

Bible study procedures

The Campus Staff Worker (CSW) prepares the template for the week before sending it to all of the Associate Staff Workers (ASWs) who ensure that the template is then printed ready for the bible study in their nominated campus group. Each group member is given a copy of the bible study template which they can write on and keep.

The study is designed for a 20 to 30 minutes bible study. 5 minutes reading the passage, 15 to 20 minutes to individuals to personally go through and write their answers - this would take 10 mins and then they need to share their answers within their group, make sure everyone has a chance to share his or her answer and that may take 10-15mins and 5 mins for wrap up & prayer time within your small group.

A group can be made up of 5 to 6 members. Each member is encouraged to share briefly (2 minutes) and so small group number is encouraged. We encourage participants to share from the passage rather than what they’ve learned or heard from someone or from church or from what their pastor said. This is a golden rule to be said from the beginning of the study.

After the group discussion, the group will then select someone to represent the group to share in summary what they’ve learned from the passage.

Bible Talk
For any invited speaker for CF, the speaker would have been given the passage or text the students are

studying in advance for him to prepare his/her talk. We advise and encourage the speaker to speak from the passage.
